The United Nations special rapporteur on torture has criticised the Fiji's Government's treatment of a 21-year-old woman in a suspected rape and abduction case last year.
In a report tabled in Geneva overnight, the rapporteur, Juan Mendez, says the woman was allegedly abducted and raped by her ex-boyfriend, but was detained and charged with giving false information when she reported the incident to police.
The Fiji Government did not respond to communication from the office.
The report says the government failed to protect the physical and psychological integrity of the woman, including protecting her from threats and intimidation from the perpetrator, as well as from violence and coercion by the police.
