Maori branch of Anglican church wants more resources

07:27 am on 7 November 2011

The Maori arm of the Anglican church in Aotearoa has put its Pakeha partner on notice that it is unhappy with the lack of progress being made towards a more equitable sharing of resources.

The 16th biennial Synod at Te Runanganui o Te Pihopatanga o Aotearoa which finished a four day hui in Rotorua on Sunday, passed a motion which noted Tikanga Pakeha's inability to sort out a resource issue which goes back almost 20 years.

Bishop John Gray from Christchurch, who moved the motion, says when the church's constitution changed in 1992, it was agreed that all the resources of the Anglican church in Aotearoa and Polynesia would be shared.

He says it was at the top of the church's agenda to address, but almost 20 years later little has happened.

Bishop Gray says it is a matter of justice and it is time that Tikanga Maori and Tikanga Pasifika had a greater and more equitable share of all the Anglican church's resources.

He says Tikanga Maori want the issue settled urgently in a friendly, loving manner.
