Seeking a 13th successive victory, Pep Guardiola's side were rocked early on as Kyle Walker-Peters's superb finish gave Southampton a surprise lead.

Southampton were good value for their advantage and could have scored more against an unusually lacklustre City.

The hosts had more chances early in the second half but City finally got into their stride and Aymeric Laporte headed them level from Kevin De Bruyne's delivery in the 65th minute.

City took charge after that with de Bruyne thumping a shot against the post but Southampton dug in for a well-deserved share of the spoils.

City have 57 points from 23 games with Liverpool on 45 albeit having played two fewer games.

Southampton are 12th with 25 points.

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford scored a last-second winner as they beat West Ham United 1-0 at Old Trafford in the Premier League to move up to fourth spot.

Substitute Rashford tapped in a low cross from Edinson Cavani deep into stoppage time after United had broken down the left flank with the final move of the match.

The win means United move above West Ham with 38 points from 22 matches while the Hammers are now fifth on 37 from 23.

Until Rashford's goal finished off an attack started by Cristiano Ronaldo and also featuring Anthony Martial there had been few chances at either end in a disappointingly dull game.

Everton's first match of the post-Rafa Benitez era began with a 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa amid a tense atmosphere at Goodison Park where the visiting team were hit by missiles thrown from the crowd.

Villa provisionally move up to 10th with Everton 16th.

A late goal from Jonjo Shelvey earned Newcastle United a 1-0 win at Leeds United, just the second time Eddie Howe's side have tasted victory in the Premier League this season.

The victory was a crucial one for the visitors, who climbed to 18th in the standings, one point from the safety zone, having played one game fewer than Norwich City in 17th, and seven points behind Leeds in 15th.

Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves scored a late goal to seal a 2-1 win at Brentford in a match which was temporarily suspended due to security reasons.

The result extended Wolves' unbeaten run to six games in all competitions, with Bruno Lage's eighth-placed team looking strong in their pursuit of European qualification.

Earlier, the teams played out a prolonged first-half after a drone hovering above the Brentford Community Stadium paused the match for 19 minutes.
