Solomons police to propose further gun amnesty

17:11 pm on 17 October 2012

The deputy commissioner of police operations in Solomon Islands says he will propose another firearms amnesty.

This follows the gunshot injury of a logging company employee in north-east Guadalcanal over the weekend, allegedly by one of two brothers involved in a dispute over land licensed to a Malaysian firm.

Nathaniel Mosese says the gun used is believed to be a point two two hunting rifle, a domestic firearm that ought to have been handed in when the Regional Assistance Mission collected all weapons in 2003.

"From information we are receiving there could be some weapons still around the community. The amnesty period for handing over weapons has lapsed and it may be an issue that we need to re-look at to make another call for the surrender of weapons again. We need to look into that."
