Cooks helmet law reversal labelled a waste of time

13:24 pm on 7 April 2008

A Cook Islands road safety campaigner says repealing a controversial transport law is a waste of time.

Cabinet is to repeal its transport act of 2007 which would have made it compulsory for all motorcyclists to wear a safety approved helmet at all times on the road from April the 12th.

Don Silk who heads the Road Safety Council, says he wishes cabinet had the courage of its convictions.

"If they scrap the helmet law, it means they will go back to the previous law, and in our opinion that was a waste of time."

Crown Law office has also been instructed to draft an amendment of the act which will be considered by Cabinet early this week.
