A study in Fiji has revealed that tens of thousands of people are forced to live on less than one US dollar a day and thousands of others on less than 50 cents a day.
The survey, carried out by a lecturer at the USP, Dr Manoranjan Mohanty, found that as many as 80 thousand people around Fiji, are living in squatter settlements as a result of expiring land leases.
Dr Mohanty says urban squatters lack most basic services such as piped water supply, sanitation, electricity and solid waste disposal provisions.
