McDonalds, Weight Watchers combo rejected

Advocates for healthy eating are criticising a partnership between fast food company McDonalds and slimming business Weight Watchers.

The companies have begun promoting some meals, including chicken nuggets and a fish burger, as suitable for dieters.

McDonalds says the special menu meets Weight Watchers standards because of healthier cooking oil which has driven down the saturated fat content.

But Diabetes New Zealand is worried about the public misinterpreting Weight Watchers' support for three meal choices as an endorsement for all McDonalds food.

The Pacific Island Food and Nutrition Action Group says the alliance is undermining its hard work in helping people realise what is healthy.
