A woman in New Caledonia has died of dengue a day after she was put into intensive care.
The government said the 61-year-old woman is the first to die of dengue this year.
It said 528 people have been infected with the mosquito-borne disease this year and 30 of them have been taken to hospital.
Extra efforts have been made to try to eliminate possible breeding grounds for the insects near the deceased woman's home in Dumbea near Noumea.
There has been unusual weather this year with heavy rain in March and April as well as higher temperatures in the subsequent period.
