French Polynesia's biggest political party, the Tahoeraa Huiraatira, is due to meet tonight to consider the removal of more than a dozen members.
The party suffered a split in the assembly this month when the government and its backers formed a new group to cement a rift that emerged in recent months.
The party says those who sided with the president, Edouard Fritch, are being seen as having left the party.
Tonight's gathering is expected to discuss whether to formalise their expulsion although the status of Mr Fritch may have to be determined by a full party Congress.
The election of two members of the French Senate at the beginning of the month followed weeks of acrimony.
