The American Samoa government is planning to change the way a US$2.6 million settlement from cannery giant, StarKist, can be spent.
The settlement was for environmental violations at its plant.
The governor, Lolo Matalasi Moliga, said the entire amount had been deposited into an air pollution fund that is limited in the projects it can give money to.
Lolo said there were many projects that could benefit from the settlement so there is a need to amend the law to allow it to be spent on a wider range of environmental projects.
He wants the Malaloa dock to receive the bulk of the fund.
