RSA killing getaway driver paroled

13:12 pm on 5 March 2014

The getaway driver in the RSA triple murders has been released on parole.

Darnell Tupe waited in a car while William Bell killed three people and left a fourth for dead at the Mt Wellington-Panmure RSA on 8 December 2001.

Bill Absalom, Mary Hobson and Wayne Johnson were murdered and Susan Couch was almost beaten to death during the attack in Auckland.

Tupe was sentenced to 12 years in prison for manslaughter. He was paroled in 2012 but that was revoked last year when he assaulted his sister and drove while diqualified.

He was released again in August last year, and again sent back to prison when he breached a condition not to drink alcohol.

The board says it is concerned alcohol is still a problem for the 34-year-old but it has made his release subject to eight conditions, including alcohol counselling.

Tupe's sentence expires in May and parole conditions are to be imposed for the six months past that date.
