Chinese President talks trade with Key

11:29 am on 21 November 2014

Prime Minister John Key's playing tour guide to the Chinese president has resulted in the signing of ten new agreements.

President Xi Jingping received a red carpet reception, a 21 gun salute, and a lucky number eight All Black jersey from Ma'a Nonu during his visit to Wellington yesterday.

But during a day of bilateral meetings China's trade relationship with New Zealand was discussed at length.

Radio New Zealand reports that President Xi said the trading relationship between New Zealand and China still has enormous room to grow, with the two countries set to hit $30 billion in two-way trade by 2020.

He was reassuring over concerns that China's new trade agreement with Australia could harm New Zealand.

"On the contrary, possibly, New Zealand will have to worry about the fact that there is more Chinese demand than you can possibly supply. We have a very stable market there and the market will continue to expand in the future."

A range of changes were made to the New Zealand and China Agreements and Arrangements document [pdf] as a result of Key's meeting with President Xi, and the China Working Holiday Scheme was extended.

At the end of the day, Key and President Xi jointly issued a press release, reaffirming “the deepening of mutual trust and understanding, and the expansion of practical cooperation and exchanges” between the two countries.

New Labour leader Andrew Little was intending to discuss foreign investment and China's human rights record when he met with President Xi this morning.
