A series of quakes has rattled Christchurch, with the largest a 4.4 tremor.

The quake hit at 7.37am and was centred 10km north-east of the city, at a depth of 8km.

More than 6600 people reported feeling the shake.

A light 3.6 tremor was recorded a few minutes earlier.

Overnight, a moderate 4.0 quake struck in the same area, at 2.21am.

One person said online the largest quake "was a doozy" and another said the tremors were as if someone was "shaking my bed ever so gently for 10 seconds or so."
