A luxury eco-resort has been opened on a remote island in the Tetiaroa islets in French Polynesia, owned by the estate of American actor Marlon Brando.

The Brando, an exclusive resort accessible only by plane, opened on Tuesday on the late actor's former home island, about 50 kilometres from Tahiti.

The LA Times reports that it was part of the late actor's vision to transform Tetiaroa into a sustainable resort.

The resort has 35 villas with private beaches, massage and steam baths and spa suites, and Polynesian-inspired cuisine.

There's also an eco-station at the resort run by the Tetiaroa Society where scientists conduct ocean research.
