Police chase ends in shooting in Blenheim

Police have shot a man at the end of a pursuit in Blenheim this evening.

The man was wanted by police but failed to stop and fled at about 4pm.

Road spikes were used and the car came to a halt at the intersection of Hardings Road and State Highway One, east of Blenheim.

Acting Tasman District Commander Virginia Welch said the man had a knife and was then shot in the arm by an officer.

In a statement police said after being shot, the accused then tried to get into a cop vehicle and flee.

They said he was challenged by police staff, arrested and then given immediate first aid before being transported to Wairau Hospital, where he ramains under police guard.

Police staff are receiving support following the incident.
