One person has died after a car hit a pedestrian on State Highway One in Northland tonight.

Emergency services were called to the small settlement of Hikurangi, north of Whangarei, at about 6.40pm.
Police say the road will remain closed for some time tonight, and diversions are in place.
People are asked to avoid the area.
