Covid-19 update: 6440 new community cases, 704 people in hospital

The Ministry of Health is reporting 6440 new Covid-19 cases in the community today, and 704 hospitalisations including 11 in ICU.

This takes the rolling seven-day average of community case numbers to 6355, down from 8111 this time last week.

There are 704 people in hospital with Covid-19, with 11 people in ICU.

The total number of deaths attributed to Covid-19 as an underlying cause or as a contributing factor is now 1589, up 26 from yesterday.

There are two additional deaths reported by the Ministry of Health where the cause of death is not currently available.

Of the 28 people reported by the Ministry of Health today, one was in their 40s, one in their 50s, two in their 60s, eight in their 70s, 10 in their 80s and six were aged over 90.

Eight of the deaths were in Auckland region, four each from Hawke's Bay and Wellington, three people from Southern District, two each from Waikato, Lakes, and Canterbury, and one person from each of Tairāwhiti, Taranaki, and Nelson Marlborough.

The ministry said there were now a total of 1589 deaths confirmed as attributable to Covid-19, either as the underlying cause of death or as a contributing factor. The seven-day rolling average increase in total deaths attributable to Covid-19 is now 22.

Yesterday, there were 7113 Covid-19 cases in the community and 33 deaths with the virus.
