The Christchurch City Council is hoping to keep the New Brighton Pier open for most of the time it will take to complete earthquake repairs.

The $8 million repair will start in February and is scheduled to take 12 months.

Watertight tubes will be built around the damaged columns holding up the pier to enable work to be carried out underneath, while people continue using the platform above.

The adjacent New Brighton Library has been closed for repairs and was expected to reopen early next year.
