Interviews and live sets from the New Zealand music underground. This week, we catch up with Wellington act Maple Syrup.
Wellington four piece band Maple Syrup have just released their debut EP Ace and Gab’s Honeymoon, featuring six quirky pop-infused songs that were recorded at Levin’s Tsunami Studios after guitarist Jerry Ramirez won some studio time in a competition.
Originally starting out as a two-piece jam project between vocalist Vera Williams and Ramirez, Maple Syrup’s original inspiration was the folk-inspired nonsense lyrics of bands such as Ween. With the addition of Tarquin on drums and Lukas on bass they’ve veered into a heavier grunge sound while retaining the knack for some sweet pop hooks.
We caught up with Maple Syrup at a flat in Newtown, Wellington on their release night for their new EP.
