Cordons in the Rangitikei town of Marton were lifted late in the afternoon after a number of explosives were taken to the local police station.
A police spokesperson said member of the public found the standard and electronic detonators and brought them to police about 1.30pm, for safety reasons.
Cordons were put in place while the NZ Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team travelled up from Wellington to investigate. They were lifted about 5.30pm.
The explosives were destroyed.
Marton School, located inside the cordon, was locked down.
A post on the school's Facebook page thanked everyone for their support and confirmed police cleared the school on "home time".
