Resurgence of dengue fever in Tonga

08:29 am on 14 April 2004

Health authorities in Tonga are battling a resurgence of dengue fever.

There have been two recent deaths from the mosquito borne disease and there have been cases of infection reported on Tongatapu, Vava'u, Eua and Ha'apai.

The Tongan Broadcasting Corporation says last year at least four deaths were attributed to dengue.

Officials are anticipating a gradual increase in the number of cases because of prolonged rainy periods affecting the country.
