Heavy rain warnings for parts of the country

Heavy rain warnings and watches are in place for many parts of the country.

An orange heavy rain warning is in place for Bay of Plenty east of Te Kaha and Gisborne north of Tokomaru Bay from 8pm Tuesday through to 1pm Wednesday.

An orange rain warning is in place for Westland south of Otira through to 6am Thursday.

Taranaki about and north of the mountain, including coastal areas from Ōpunake to Urenui is under an orange heavy rain warning from 2pm Wednesday to 2pm Friday.

"A moist north to northeasterly airstream will bring outbreaks of heavy rain to New Zealand this week and into the weekend," MetService said.

"Warnings and watches are in force for many areas, and more are likely to be added during the coming days.

"People are urged to stay up to date with the latest forecasts."

MetService says Northland may see heavy rain and possible thunderstorms from 9am Tuesday to mid afternoon Thursday.

A heavy rain watch is currently in place for Bay of Plenty from Rotorua to Te Kaha, through to 5pm Wednesday.

Taumarunui, Taupō, Taihape may see heavy rain from late Wednesday morning through to early Friday , as may Tongariro National Park.

Nelson is also under a heavy rain watch, from 2pm Wednesday, until 2pm Thursday.

Buller south of Karamea may also see heavy rain, from late Wednesday morning, through to late Thursday morning.
