Maori suicide rates being discussed at symposium

10:35 am on 10 September 2009

Maori suicide rates are on the agenda at a symposium in Wellington this week.

Waatea News reports more than 250 health professionals, community workers and academics are expected at Pipitea marae to discuss culture and suicide prevention.

Suicide Prevention Foundation director Merryn Stratham says suicide is viewed differently across cultures and clinicians need to understand when cultural interventions could be useful.

She told Waatea News it's important to build up knowledge about what works for Maori.
