Immigration New Zealand said its Advance Passenger Processing (APP) system stopped working at 9.30am due to a "global issue", but has now confirmed the system was back up and running.

The issue, which affected all international flights coming in and out of Auckland and Wellington airports, meant passengers' passports could not be scanned in automatically.

Passports could be checked manually, but this caused some delays in the immigration process, said the airport. Smart gates were also out of action.

No flights were delayed by the problem.

Immigration NZ said when passengers checked in overseas, APP validated their entitlement to travel to or through New Zealand. Passenger information entered into airlines' systems is screened against Immigration New Zealand's database at time of check in.
