Ferns flop again in Melbourne

More of the same from the Silver Ferns as they surrendered a substantial lead in the final quarter and lost the deciding terst of the Constellation Cup series in Melbourne.

The towering 23-year old goal-shooter Caitlin Bassett was again the toast of Australian netball with 20 goals from 22 in the seond half as the Diamonds piled on the points to pull back a deficit as big as 8 points at one stage.

Bassett also shot the winning goal in extra time of the world championship final against New Zealand in Singapore in July to secure that title for the Australians.

Apart from winning the series 3-2, Australia secured the world No.1 ranking.

Veteran Irene van Dyk finished with the best figures for her side, with 24 goals from 26 attempts, at 92 per cent.
