This afternoon's crash has closed the Desert Road and police were called to the crash, between Waipakihi Rd and Rangipo Intake Rd just before 3.30pm.

Several people were injured, and one person who was in a critical condition, has since died, police said.

The death brings the Easter road toll to two, after another person died earlier this morning in a crash at Tirohanga Road between between Tokoroa and Taupō in Bay of Plenty.

In another crash, five people were taken to Waikato Hospital after a collision involving a car and a truck in Waikato this morning.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of State Highway 29 and SH27 in Matamata just before 10am.

One woman remains in a critical condition in intensive care at Waikato Hospital.

A Waikato District Health Board spokeswoman said another person remained in the emergency department and three more people were in a stable condition.

Police earlier said an 8-month-old baby, a 2-year-old and a 3-year-old all had minor injuries.

The road was closed after the accident but has now reopened.

A woman has also died in hospital after she was hit by a car in Māngere yesterday morning.
