The premier of Guadalcanal province in Solomon Islands says it fully endorses a proposal by a South Korean company to set up a multi-million dollar tuna cannery and loin factory at Doma.

Dongwon Industries, one of the world's leading fisheries companies, first expressed interest in the project in 2009 and a company advisor is in Solomon Islands this week to meet government officials to discuss the project.

He will also meet the premier of Guadalcanal, Stephen Punga, who says the development would be a major source of employment for the province, and bring other economic spin-offs.

"The provincial government and the Ministry of Fisheries at the moment is working very hard for this project. The land was already located for the project; it's 20 hectares of land and we want to see the implementation of this project on Guadalcanal."

Stephen Punga says concerns about any environmental impacts will be addressed before any agreement is signed.
