A 45-year-old Auckland man who stabbed a family member at a McDonald's restaurant has pleaded guilty to attempted murder.

The stabbing in January left the victim seriously injured and requiring life-saving surgery.

Mitesh Kumar appeared in the High Court at Auckland on Wednesday morning, pleading guilty to attempted murder and two counts of failing to carry out obligations under search powers.

He has been remanded in custody until sentencing in November.
