Volcano observation in PNG to be improved

16:57 pm on 13 September 2002

Concerns about the lack of seismic monitoring in the Papua New Guinea province of West New Britain, is to be addressed within the next month.

The Post Courier reports that Mt Pago, which has been emitting smoke and ash for the past month, is one of four very active volcanoes in the province, which has 27 altogether.

Only Mount Ulawun, reputed to one of the six most dangerous volcanoes in the world, has a seismic station and is being monitored by the Rabaul Vulcanological Observatory.

The arrival of a US-based team means that the monitoring situation is expected to be rectified within the next four weeks.

130-thousand US dollars worth of seismic station equipment is also expected to arrive tomorrow and will be installed together with some Japanese equipment.
