Canterbury roading infrastructure work completed

15:46 pm on 30 June 2017

The organisation responsible for repairing Christchurch's roading infrastructure says its job is done and it is handing the remaining work to the city council.

The Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team was charged in 2011 with fixing the city's quake-damaged roads, bridges and pipes.

The combined local and central government initiative was expected to finish four months ago.

Transport Minister Simon Bridges said the city's roads were now functioning after one of the most complex engineering programmes ever carried out.

Almost 1.38 million square metres of roading had to be replaced as part of the works, costing about $2bn.

Mr Bridges said there was still more work to be done, which the City Council would manage.
