A plane taking-off from Auckland international airport smashed some lights on the runway last Saturday morning.
The LAN Chile Airbus A3-40 was leaving Auckland for Sydney at 6.20am on 18 May when the incident happened.
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission said the plane appears to have been misaligned as it started its journey.
Spokesperson Peter Northcote said the aircraft managed to take off but smashed some runway lights, which damaged the plane's wheels.
The commission will look into a range of factors including what the weather was like and the crew's experience.
Its investigation is expected to take at least a year.
