Currently, children of former pupils and their siblings can get out of zone priority to attend some schools - but that is now being reviewed by the Ministry of Education.

Westlake Boys High School has sent a letter to parents urging them to voice their concerns to the Ministry.

Principal David Ferguson said it was important that family legacies could continue.

"It helps strengthen our culture. The idea of a young boy going to the school that his father went to is a neat thing for an adolescent," Ferguson said.

The school had second and third-generation pupils attending at present, but the rule change could mean brothers ended up at different schools, he said.
