Retrial bid in Post Fiji case withdrawn

The defence lawyer for former Post Fiji managing director Peni Mau has withdrawn an application for a retrial and for the presiding Judge Justice Daniel Goundar to recuse himself from the case.

FBC News reports that the application was heard in the Suva High Court this morning.

The defence lawyer Devanesh Sharma says in light of Judge Goundar's sentencing he was seeking the Court's leave to withdraw the application for retrial and recusal.

Judge Goundar immediately granted leave for the application to be dismissed.

Mau and a former Post Fiji Board Chairman, Mahendra Patel, were sentenced to 9 months and one year in prison respectively for abuse of office.

The Defence has been given 30 days to appeal agains the sentence.
