Samoa village comes around to road side law change in interests of public safety

19:54 pm on 8 September 2009

Villagers in the Samoa village of Laulii on Upolu say they are resigned to the changes to driving on the left hand side of the road which came into force this morning.

Earlier road markings in the village had been vandalised and direction signs were torn down, but by the time of the change-over all had been repainted and re-erected.

A village store owner, Talalelei Pauga, says the entire village had been opposed to the change but the people now have no option but to obey the new law in the interests of public safety.

"Well to be honest the whole village was against it but we have to support the government, we can't do anything about it. That was the whole decision by the village was to go against the switch. The switch has already been implemented so we have to support the safety of our people."

A police officer monitoring roads in the village confirms that the transition has gone smoothly and local villagers are co-operating.
