War badge taken in home invasion

19:42 pm on 8 April 2014

Police are hoping a distinctive jacket with a war veteran badge might lead them to two men who robbed an elderly couple at their Auckland house.

Detective Sergeant Eugene Pickett says the couple were held hostage in their bedroom of their New Lynn home about 7am on Sunday by a man weilding a crowbar, while the another man ransacked their house for items to steal.

Mr Pickett said a beige jacket was among those items, along with the badge awarded to the man in 2006 by former Prime Minister Helen Clark.

The two men were Pacific Islanders or Maori aged in their 20s or 30s. One was of slim build, while the other was fat and softly spoken. They were diving a red mid-80s four-door car.

Mr Pickett is urging anyone who sees the jacket to contact police.
