The telecommunications firm Digicel has launched a new mobile money service in Fiji to allow customers to transfer funds and pay bills.

The service is being offered in partnership with Post Fiji and will allow people to open an account on their mobile phone.

The Mobile Money Director for the Pacific, Stephen Breen says 70% of people in Fiji don't have a bank account, so the mobile service will assist them to make basic transactions.

"It allows you to load money onto an electronic wallet. And from there you can top-up your phone, transfer money to family and friends, pay to see bills and withdraw cash at an agent, post office or banks in the country."

Stephen Breen says Fiji is the first of Digicel's six Pacific markets to launch the service and the company plans to extend the initiative to the others.
