Buyers at the Karaka thoroughbred sales today had the last chance to buy the offspring of one of New Zealand's most successful stallions, Zabeel.

Zabeel retired from stud last year and today the last of his yearlings to be offered at public auction went under the hammer.

Bloodstock New Zealand sales manager Danny Roulston said it was a special moment when Zabeel's owner, Sir Patrick Hogan, led the colt around the ring before a packed pavillion.

"Zabeel's been such a servant to the New Zealand breeding industry and to the world in general he's been an absolute icon and he's certainly left a legacy," he said.

The colt sold for $160,000 to a Hong Kong syndicate.
