American Samoan senate to again request meeting with House of Representatives

17:10 pm on 1 February 2006

The American Samoan senate is to again ask for a meeting with the House of Representatives after its first request was rejected.

The senators had asked for the meeting after three of their bills which had been sent to the House last year, had been rejected without explanation.

But, our correspondent in Pago Pago, Monica Miller, said the Representatives did not feel they needed to do any explaining.

She says the senate won't leave it at that.

"The senate has said they'll give it another go. They'll again ask. Maybe, I think, what they're considering is just the two leaders, the speaker of the house and the senate president to meet first and then discuss why it's better to have this meeting."

The House of Representatives is democratically elected while the senate is comprised of high ranking chiefs selected by their villages.
