The Post Courier reports this will be the second biggest mining operation in PNG to shut down, after the OK Tedi mine also stopped operations due to low water levels.

The PNG Chamber of Commerce says the drought caused by the El Nino weather will see companies scaling down operations and laying off workers.

The operator of the Porgera Mine says the company will be using the closure to bring forward some of its scheduled maintenance activities.

So far no workers have been laid off at Porgera because of the temporary shutdown.
