Southlanders have been thrown into turmoil with Rio Tinto's announcment today it will wind down the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter resulting in the direct loss of almost 1,000 jobs and another 1,600 associated jobs. The company's review of the business found it's no longer viable due to high energy costs and a difficult future. Our Otago-Southland reporter, Timothy Brown, is in Southland and has more.
