Auckland's Mayor Len Brown says the council is supportive of papakainga development for hapu and iwi in the rohe.
The council's long term plan - or ten year budget - was currently out for public consultation over the next seven weeks - and would be finalised in June.
Auckland's largest hapu, Ngati Whatua o Orakei, was developing an urban papakainga for its descendants.
Mr Brown said he expected two or three other papakainga or housing projects to be developed in the coming years.
He said the council wanted to support those developments, when it could - and believed the long- term plan had a reasonable amount of commitment to tangata whenua.
