Fiji ferry not in danger, despite damage

12:54 pm on 19 April 2019

A ferry reported to have been in trouble near the Fiji island of Kadavu is not taking on water.

Officials had previously said the ferry was in "a bit of danger" after it lost its forward ramp en route to Kadavu from Suva.

The director of the Maritime Surveillance Rescue Coordination Centre, Lieutenant Sairusi Coloti, said despite the damage, water was not building up.

"The inter-island ferry is still on its way to its destination. They've just slowed down just to go ensure that the swell does not overwhelm the ship."

It was expected to reach Kadavu this evening.
