10:40 am on 23 November 2017

Air New Zealand says it evacuated a building as a precaution after a non-hazardous substance spilled at Auckland Airport this morning.

Six fire crews were called to the scene where the chemical had spread over a large area at an Air New Zealand cargo building at about 5.45am.

One person has been taken to hospital.

Air New Zealand said the building was evacuated in line with normal procedure and a small number of staff were medically assessed as a precaution.

Auckland Airport said passenger terminals were unaffected.

Fire shift manager Jaron Phillips said six fire crews have been at the scene, including a hazmat team.

He said decontamination work was now underway.

It is not known what the chemical is.
