The red meat industry says a free trade agreement with the European Union would not only save New Zealand millions of dollars a year but also ensure greater market access.
The Prime Minister, John Key, announced from Brussels yesterday that negotiations for a free trade agreement would proceed.
Beef + Lamb chair James Parsons said it was an exciting opportunity for the country's sheep and beef exporters.
About $70 million worth of tariffs was paid annually on beef exports to Europe, and Mr Parsons said it would be great to see that eliminated.
He said a deal with Europe could also ensure New Zealand's competitiveness with other red meat exporters.
