Fonterra has stopped selling cheese directly to the United States.
In a statement, the dairy co-operative confirms it has not renewed its licenses to export cheese into America this year.
But it has twice declined to say why.
Fonterra said it could continue to sell to the United States, but through other companies which still had a license to export.
Fonterra does not say why it would choose to do this, or how much it would try to sell that way.
The United States is a relatively small market for New Zealand cheese.
It imposes trade barriers on New Zealand cheese, with quotas and tariffs in place.
