New Zealand boxer Joseph Parker has scored a first round knockout win over Australian Faiga Opelu in their heavyweight bout in Melbourne.

Opelu went to the canvas following a vicious right hook from Parker.

Opelu tried to resume the fight but the referee waved him off with 90 seconds left in the round.

"One round was enough for me, It was to be dominant, be the big man and every punch make it worth it," Parker said afterwards.

The 31 year old also feels he's found the right formula with his trainers.

"This is the best I've felt in a long time, I needed something like that, a good performance and I want to fight again as soon as I can.

"I want to keep busy, I want to keep that momentum going until I get to the top."

It has been a while since Parker has scored a knockout victory, with the former WBO champion improving his record to 32 and 3.

Parker now wants another chance against the three fighters he's lost to.

"I want Dillian Whyte, I want (Anthony) Joshua and I want Joe Joyce again, I want to avenge those losses.

"Like tonight it could have been a different performance with those guys.

"But I know I need to climb my way back and keep fighting and keep winning."

On the undercard, fellow New Zealander David Nyika went to four rounds before a TKO win over Louis Marsters in a five-round cruiserweight contest.

Nyika has improved his record to 6 and 0, 5 by way of knockouts.
