Black Caps beat Australia in fiery clash

Australia's one-day series against New Zealand began in explosive fashion on Wednesday with pace bowler Mitchell Johnson appearing to clash heads with New Zealand batsman Scott Styris in a mid-pitch confrontation.

A furious Johnson was led away from Styris by Australian players after the pair clashed at the end of an over in which Styris had slogged two boundaries off Johnson's bowling.

Chasing Australia's 275 for eight at Napier's McLean Park, Styris scored an unbeaten 49 from 34 balls to guide the Black Caps to a two-wicket win with four deliveries to spare, AAP reports.

Man-of-the-match Ross Taylor, who was acting captain with Daniel Vettori absent because of a neck strain, top-scored with 70.

Darryl Tuffey took three wickets for New Zealand, while Shane Bond took two.

Game two is in Auckland on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the New Zealand women's side has lost the first one-day match against Australia in Queenstown.

Set 229 to win, the tourists achieved their target on the final ball of the match.
