Strong earthquake strikes northeast Iran

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake has struck in northeast Iran, leaving at least one person dead and several injured.

State news agency Irna quoted emergency services as saying there were fears of high numbers of casualties in villages and small towns.

It said Red Crescent teams and emergency services had been sent to the area.

The earthquake was 33km deep, and hit near the holy city of Mashhad.
