High tides and rough seas have forced the closure of roads and cancellations of ferries.
In Wellington, Owhiro Bay Parade from Happy Valley Road to Red Rocks has been closed since about 11am this morning, and Moa point road to the Airport is also closed because of heavy seas.
Wellington City Council said it expected to re-open the roads in the next couple of hours as the tide goes out.
The rough weather also caused delays and cancellations for the Bluebridge and Interislander ferries.
The Bluebridge Ferry was scheduled to leave Wellington at 1.30pm but is now due to leave at 3.30pm.
The Interislander 2:45pm passenger sailing from Wellington was cancelled and freight only is being sent to Picton.
Passengers will be transferred onto the 6.30pm sailing.
In the South Island, part of State Highway One, near Kaikoura, has reopened after high seas and debris blocked it today.
The Transport Agency said drivers should expect some delays while traffic clears and drive to the conditions as there may be contractors still working the area.
Wellington's south coast was also battered by big waves and a number of ferries were cancelled, yesterday.
