Orange Hall up for sale

20:44 pm on 6 February 2010

A historic building that once housed Auckland's big band and jazz dance scenes is up for sale.

The Orange Hall on Newton Rd, or the Orange as it became known, was built in the early 1920s, and by the 1940s was one of the city's hotspots.

It was immortalised in the 1958 Peter Cape song Down the Hall on Saturday Night, with the line "We're as slick as the Orange in Auckland".

Sales consultant Bill Fenton says the interior of the 743 square metre building has been well looked after and has many features intact, including the dance floor, which was replaced in 1954. The hall is for sale by private treaty.
